If you expect to work again during this tax year...
The PAYE system is cumulative. So if you are out of work for two months, you will pay less tax for a month or two when you go back to work. So there is little point in claiming a tax refund.
If you might not go back to work for the rest of this tax year ....

How do I go about claiming it back?
Fill in Form P50 and send it to the address on the form.
You should wait 8 weeks if you are on Jobseekers Benefit.
If you don't qualify for Jobseekers Benefit, you may claim after 4 weeks.
Can I claim back tax from the previous year?
No.
Roughly how much will I get back?
This will depend on
- The length of time you have been unemployed
- The amount of tax you have paid
Is JB taxable?
Yes, apart from the first €18 per week and any amount you get in respect of a child. Check The Taxation of Jobseekers' Benefit for further information.
Can I get PRSI and Health Levy back?
If your income in 2009 is below €26,000, you may be entitled to get a refund of the Health Levy portion which is 2%. You cannot claim it back until after the end of the tax year. More information
Can I get a refund of the Income Levy?
If your income for the year is less than €18,304, you will be able to get a refund of the Income Levy. The process for getting this refund has not yet been set up.
Can I give my spouse my tax credits while I am unemployed?
Yes you can transfer your tax credits less the amount of Jobseekers Benefit to your spouse.
Call your tax office and they will do this for you.
