Business networking
This is the process of establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with other business people and potential clients and/or customers.
How do I get the best out of it?
It is a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups with a common interest. It is important to think of networking as an ongoing activity and not something necessarily to be approached if you are in the market for employment.
Does it help me if I have been made redundant?
If the time comes when you are in the market for work you will have invaluable contacts who you will be able to call on for assistance and market information.
How can I network?
When calling a contact always ask for their advice and not a job or an interview so they don't feel like they're being obligated to follow up on something they can't necessarily deliver on.
Always try to get a name
If your contact can't help you do ask them for a name of someone who may be able to, they should be happy to help and most people will know of someone. This means most contact with fellow networkers is a productive activity even if they can't directly help you. It also increases your network and ultimately its usefulness.
General Business Awareness
To communicate on an even platform with peers it's important to keep up with global and domestic economic developments. In this current economic climate there are major developments on a regular basis.
Activities
Try to watch the news and read papers regularly and listen to relevant radio programs when possible. If your time is in short supply it is easy to catch up with the main headlines on:
Keeping in touch with key players
Providing relevant market information is always appreciated. This creates a more equal forum for information seeking. It's an excuse to stay in contact and build up a defined network of contacts.
