- Identify your transferable skills gained from your work experience to date
- When changing careers it is more important to highlight these transferable skills in an objectives section near the top of your CV to catch the attention of prospective employers
Reasons to change career
Changing careers not only takes a great deal of effort, it also requires a good deal of reflection and planning. To successfully plan a change of careers there are several factors which need to be considered
- Areas of interest/expertise
- Geographical location
- Long term plans/strategy
- Preference for working alone or with people
- Preferential working environment
- Salary Range
Once you have decided on your new career you need to be realistic about the time frame, plan carefully and be prepared to budget and sacrifice time as well as review training and further education. It is always good to explore the possibility of taking advantage of previous training or a skill set which you have acquired.
Mistakes Career Changers make
- Hasty Decisions
Are you unhappy in your career path or just unhappy that you've been made redundant?
Are there realistic opportunities in your chosen field available?
Are you in a position to take advantage of the opportunities in your chosen field if they are available?
- Lack of Research
- Moving sectors as a friend or family member is doing well in the area
- Don't expect a career coach to tell you what your new career should be, they can guide you but not make the decision.
-
There are several good books and tests which will be able to help you as to the area you may be interested in looking in but tests are not 100% science in relation to your ideal career
How to use pscyhpmetric tests during your job search
- In analysing the results of a psychometric test or any related test you should be looking for clues and hunches so you can explore new avenues for research and not ignoring these due to a previous bias. You're using it to broaden your search initially so you can decide on how to narrow them down after further research.
